Understanding Archival Ink

Archival ink is a museum-grade printing fluid specifically engineered to resist fading, yellowing, and chemical degradation over long periods.

While everyday printers use cheap, liquid-based colorants, true archival printing requires pigment-based inks. These inks contain microscopic, solid particles of color (derived from stable minerals or organic compounds) suspended in a liquid carrier. When printed, these solid particles bind mechanically to the surface fibers of the paper, creating an incredibly stable image that can withstand the test of time.

The Core Difference: How They Sit on Paper

To understand why archival ink lasts so long, it helps to look at how it interacts with paper compared to standard ink.

  • Normal Ink (Dye-Based): Think of normal ink like salt dissolved in water. The colorant dissolves completely. When printed, the paper completely soaks up the liquid. Because the color molecules are fully exposed and unprotected, environmental factors like sunlight (UV rays) and oxygen easily break them apart, causing the print to fade rapidly.

  • Archival Ink (Pigment-Based): Think of archival ink like fine sand mixed into water. The particles do not dissolve. When printed, the liquid carrier sinks into the paper, but the solid color pigments sit safely on top, locking onto the paper fibers. Because these particles are solid and dense, they act like tiny shields that resist UV light and air.
