Advantage of having more than 4 colours in the printer

Moving beyond the standard CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) process to 6, 8, or even 12-color systems drastically changes what a printer can achieve, especially in commercial, fine art, and large-format applications.

Significantly Expanded Color Gamut

Standard CMYK inherently struggles to reproduce certain regions of the color spectrum—particularly vibrant oranges, bright greens, deep blues, and rich reds.

  • Adding RGB or Orange/Green: By incorporating dedicated Red, Blue, or Green inks into the mix, the printer’s color space widens massively. This is critical for reproducing highly saturated images, fine art reproductions, and hitting exact, out-of-gamut Pantone spot colors for corporate clients without relying on approximations.

Flawless Gradients and Skin Tones

In a 4-color system, creating light colors (like pale skies or subtle skin tones) requires the printer to place tiny, spaced-out dots of standard Cyan or Magenta. On close inspection, this can look grainy or speckled.

  • Light Cyan (Lc) and Light Magenta (Lm): Adding these lighter inks allows the printer to lay down solid, continuous tones in highlight areas rather than relying on sparse dot patterns. This results in incredibly smooth gradients, seamless halftones, and highly accurate, photographic-quality skin tones.

Superior Monochrome and D-Max

Printing true, neutral black-and-white images with only CMYK is notoriously difficult; the printer often mixes colors to achieve grey, which can cause color casts (metamerism) that shift depending on the lighting conditions.

  • Multiple Blacks and Greys: Advanced printers often utilize multiple black inks (like Photo Black for glossy media and Matte Black for cotton rag/canvas) alongside dedicated Grey and Photo Grey inks. This ensures perfectly neutral B&W prints, smooth transitions in the shadows, and a higher D-Max (maximum black density) for richer, deeper contrast.

Chroma Optimizer (Clear Coat)

A dedicated clear-coat layer is applied over printed areas on glossy and semi-glossy papers. This critical element regulates surface reflection, dramatically reducing bronzing (color shifting at different angles) and ensuring a completely uniform gloss finish across the entire photograph.
